William Hawley papers, 1863-1873.

Papers of Col. William Hawley consisting of official reports of engagement that detail the day-to-day movements, duties, and skirmishes of the 3rd Infantry of Wisconsin including detailed descriptions of the Battle of Chancellorsville, Sherman's March to the Sea, and the Grand Review in Washington, D.C. There is also a letter to the Secretary of War requesting a position for Hawley in the regular army as well as personal correspondence including from his brother, John, that detail business transactions and family news. A letter from Edwin Bryant gives an account of several former officers of the 3rd regiment as well as detailing recent changes in Madison and a brief but vivid letter from Hawley to his wife describes being caught out on the prairie unprepared.
